Brief introduction:

You will have opportunities to apply your learning to early years settings and to demonstrate your understanding through written and practical assignments.
Course Requirements
For BTECs:
5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4 or above Previous study in this subject not essential but advantageous.
A Level:
5 GCSEs (or equivalent). Grade 6 or higher in the subject being taken. Grade 4+ in English Language or Literature and Maths
For Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Psychology, Grade 7 in Maths, Grade 4+ in English Language or Literature
Assessment
Children’s Play, Learning and Development provides excellent preparation for both further study and employment. This two year course leads to a vocational qualification which will prepare you for further study and is an excellent grounding for a wide range of careers in health and social care. You will gain an understanding of how to work safely in a variety of roles within early years settings, alongside understanding how to support children with additional needs. For example, Unit 1 focuses on children’s growth and development and the factors that can influence development and how development can be promoted in early years settings. Unit 5 focuses on how to safeguard children within early years settings and the methods of ensuring activities and settings are safe. The Extended Certificate course consists of 2 external exams, and 2 units of coursework.
Year 12
- Unit 1 – Children’s Development - External Exam (1hr 30 min) Can be retaken twice
- Unit 3 - Play and Learning
Year 13
- Unit 2 - Development of Children’s Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Skills External Exam (1hr 30 min) Can be retaken
- Unit 5 – Keeping Children Safe
On completion of this qualification, you will be able to apply directly to Universities of your choice to enroll on courses such as primary and early year education. You may also choose to complete further study as part of your employment within an early years setting to gain a licence to practise within early years.
