Brief introduction:
The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Business is equivalent in size to 1.5 A-levels. Learners will take four mandatory units and two optional units to achieve this qualification. The units provide learners with an insight into the Business and Finance sectors as they investigate the principles of Business and Marketing, the use of social media on a global scale and important legal and security considerations.
Course Requirements
BTEC courses – A minimum of Grade 4 in English Language or Maths
Assessment
This qualification is assessed by completing written exams and coursework projects. It is the equivalent to 1.5 A-levels which means you can choose whether to go into employment, continue on to university or become an Advanced Apprentice.
Year 12
Unit 1 - Exploring Business
A: Explore the features of different businesses and analyse what makes them successful
B: Investigate how businesses are organised
Assignment 1: Features contributing to the success of contrasting businesses
C: Examine the environment in which businesses operate
D: Examine business markets
Assignment 2: The Effects of the Environment on a Business
E: Investigate the role and contribution of innovation and enterprise to business success
Assignment 3: How important is innovation and enterprise to today’s businesses?
Unit 2 - Developing a Marketing Campaign
(Exam 90 GLH – 9 hours, 2 retakes, January & June, out of 70 marks)
A - Introduction to the principles and purposes of marketing that underpin the creation of a rationale for a marketing campaign
B - Using information to develop the rationale for a marketing campaign
C - Planning and developing a marketing campaign
Unit 3 - Personal and Business Finance
(Exam 120 GLH – 2 hours, 2 retakes, January & June, out of 100 marks)
A - Understand the importance of managing personal finance
B - Explore the personal finance sector
C - Understand the purpose of accounting
D - Select and evaluate different sources of business finance
E - Break-even and cash flow forecasts
F - Complete statements of comprehensive income and financial position and evaluate a business's performance
Unit 4 - Managing an Event
A: Explore the role of an event organiser
Assignment 1: Could I be an event organiser?
B: Investigate the feasibility of a proposed event
C: Develop a detailed plan for a business or social enterprise event
Assignment 2: Planning an Event in the Light of Research
D: Stage and manage a business or social enterprise event
E: Reflect on the running of the event and evaluate own skills development.

Year 13
Unit 8 - Recruitment and Selection Process
A: Examine how effective recruitment and selection contribute to business success
Assignment 1: Evaluating the R&S process of a large business
B: Undertake a recruitment activity to demonstrate the processes leading to a successful job offer
C: Reflect on the recruitment and selection process of your performance
Assignment 2: The Recruitment and Selection Process
Unit 14 - Investigating Customer Service
A: Explore how effective customer service contributes to business success
B: Investigate the methods used to improve customer service in business
Assignment 1: Why is it important to provide excellent customer service?
C: Demonstrate customer service in different situations, using appropriate behaviours to meet expectations.

Progression
This qualification introduces students to key aspects of the Business and Finance practitioner roles. Students who successfully complete the qualification will be well equipped to move onto degrees in related subjects such as Marketing, Finance, Business Management, Business Administration or e-Business and Information Management.
