Brief introduction to subject:

The OLSC Football Academy begins in September 2024.  The 2 year programme will bring together talented footballers from across Wolverhampton to study, play, train and develop into the next generation of football players, coaches, referees, sport scientists and many more roles within this growing industry packed with opportunities.

Course Requirements

A minimum of Grade 4 in English Language or Maths.

Applicants will be invited to an informal interview which will include a short playing ability assessment.

Curriculum and Timetable

Academy players will study BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sport either as a 3 A level equivalent qualification or as 2 A level equivalent qualification with an additional subject.  Courses such as the FA Level 1 Coaching Award and FA Level 1 Referee Course are part of the programme.  Extensive career support includes help with UCAS applications, exposure to apprenticeship opportunities, external speakers and visits to major UK sporting venues will help to prepare players for the next stage in their career.

Football Development

Led by PE teachers and FA qualified coaches, training sessions will focus on individual skill development, team strategies and tactics along with individual fitness training plans.  A total of 4 lessons per week are reserved on the players’ timetable for training sessions.  Morning and afternoon fitness sessions with access to the school Performance Lab will help to develop players' physical condition and prepare them for competing at the highest level possible.

Facilities

Academy players will have access to:

  • A full size floodlit 3G astro turf pitch
  • A performance lab including resistance machines, CV equipment such as treadmills, rowers and exercise bikes along with a range of free weights and core stability training equipment
  • The school sportshall for indoor training sessions when required
  • The school Dojo for yoga and flexibility based sessions
  • A suite of PE classrooms
  • The Post-16 study area that includes quiet study areas and over 30 PCs

OLSC Success

The offer in short:

  • BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sport (2 A Level equivalent).
  • Option to study further modules or another subject.
  • Timetabled training sessions during curriculum time.
  • Individual Performance Analysis.
  • Training delivered by FA Level 2 and above Qualified Coaches.
  • Students will gain the FA Level 1 Coaching Qualification.
  • Students will gain a FA Refereeing qualification.
  • Entry into the West Midlands colleges leagues.
  • Entry into county and national competitions.
  • Extensive UCAS and career planning support.
  • External talks.
  • Visits including a major UK stadium. 
  • European Tour to Valencia with InspireSport.

Completion of the BTEC Sport course along with the additional qualifications gained in coaching and officiating could lead to a range of career pathways such as:
  • professional football player
  • a career in football or sports coaching
  • study of sports based courses at university
  • apprenticeships in other sports based fields such as sports management or journalism
  • careers in the leisure industry
  • further development up the football officiating progression ladder
In addition, the option for students who are successful in gaining a place in the OLSC Football Academy to study a second subject allows a limitless number of career options.
